Fine Art at Joseph Swan Academy

Course description

AS/ A Level Fine Art is an exciting course which celebrates and challenges creativity, imagination, independence and art itself. Students choosing Fine Art as an option in Year 12 must be committed to the subject and enjoy the process of working as an artist themselves. The course allows students to develop their artistic skills whilst specialising in areas and materials that are of interest to each individual.

The course culminates in an exhibition, which remains a focus throughout the two years of study.

The course acts as a stepping stone to an Art foundation course or a degree. Previous A Level Art students have successful careers in the fields of architecture, teaching, medicine, textile and fashion design, and engineering, utilising the skills learnt from their art education.

You will use and specialise in the following media, Textiles, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Film Animation, Installation, Sound-based, Land, Art, Conceptual, Printmaking, Text Based Art.

Students are expected to work very independently during this course and, in addition to the five hours of timetabled hours, there is an expectation that students will develop their work independently and in depth.

To help students with this, they are allocated their own studio space in which to work throughout the course.
