Geography A level at Nottingham Girl's Academy

Course description

Geography is your window to the world. If the wider world and interactions between people and places interest you, then geography A level is for you.

Course content

The course recognises the vital role geography has in the 21st century curriculum. It encourages you to understand life in a global world and to understand the vital, complex and interrelated issues you will face in your life such as climate change, poverty and deprivation, global shifts in economic power and the challenge of sustainable resource use. The course focuses upon the earth as a dynamic place where physical, environmental and human processes and changes interact to produce a constantly changing world that you will shortly enter as an adult. Important concepts and processes are studied in the context of real places that exist in a local, regional, national and global context.

Units covered at AS

  • G1: Changing Physical environments.
  • G2: Changing Human environments. A field course will be integrated to fit into one of the above units.

Units covered at A2

  • G3: Contemporary themes and research in Geography.
  • G4: Sustainability.

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including C grade or above in English, mathematics and geography.


You will have 4 examinations 1 for each of the units taken. Two at the end of AS Geography (G1 and G2) and two at the end of A2 Geography (G3 and G4).

Future opportunities

The understanding of the world that you gain through geography is an excellent preparation for many different career paths. For example: town planner, teacher, archaeologist, event manager, RAF, geologist and many more.
