Dance at Blackfen School for Girls

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts (Dance) is for those who are looking for a career in dance or in the Performing Arts Industry. It is suitable for those who already have intermediate or high level dance skills and are looking for a qualification that develops practical and theoretical understanding of dance and the Performing Arts Industry. The course is practical in nature and suitable for students considering pathways into higher education dance training, further vocational training or employment in the industry.

On this course you will study all aspects of dance, including choreography, performance and dance appreciation. You will learn and perform choreographed pieces and devise exciting new works of your own, which will be performed at a variety of public performance platforms. You will also study historical and contemporary dance works, audition techniques, and gain relevant industry skills. The main dance style studied is contemporary.

Course content

Unit 1: Investigating Practitioners’ Work

Unit 2: Developing Skills and Techniques for Performance

Unit 3: Group Performance Workshop

Unit 12: Contemporary Dance Technique

Entry requirements

Any or all of the below:

- At least Grade C in GCSE Dance

- At least PASS in Level 2 BTEC in Performing Arts

- Other supporting dance qualifications or experience (e.g. RAD or ISTD awards and grades)


Assessment is through practical and written coursework and examinations.

2 of the 4 units studied will be assessed externally.

2 of the 4 units studied will be assessed internally.


This subject is offered as a two year Level 3 BTEC Course. Students will be assessed throughout the course.

There are a vast number of opportunities available to you on completion of this course. You will have the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress to higher education, specialist vocational training, or employment in a variety of areas within the Dance and the Performing Arts industries.
