Extended Project Qualification Level 3 at Kemnal Technology College

Course description

The Extended Project Qualification offers opportunities for students to make a significant contribution to the choice and design of an extended project and take responsibility either for an individual task or for a defined task within a group project. Students are responsible for the development of, and improvement of their own learning and performance, becoming more critical, reflective and independent students. Students must develop and apply decision-making and problem solving skills, extending their planning, research, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills. Skills must be applied creatively, demonstrating initiative and enterprise. Students have the opportunity to use their learning experiences to support their aspirations for higher education and/or career development.

Course content

What does the extended project involve?

The EPQ is either a 5000 word essay style paper, or a 1000 word essay submitted with an artefact. Students are required, with appropriate supervision, to: choose an area of interest; draft a title and aims of the project for formal approval by the centre; plan, research and carry out the project; deliver a presentation to a non specialist audience; provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment.

Future opportunities

The Extended Project Qualification provides an opportunity for students to extend their abilities beyond the A-level syllabus, stand out and prepare for university or their future career. It can also be used to earn extra UCAS points. Universities are seeing the EPQ as a valuable preparation for the demands of the work expected from students in higher education today.
