Business Studies AS/A Level at Ysgol Brynrefail
What will I learn?
You will learn how businesses started and developed, organised and their different objectives. You will investigate how businesses use marketing techniques and the importance of managing people effectively. You will become familiar with financial accounting methods, business laws and regularly discuss the economic problems of the world we live in. You will become aware of ethical business issues and how the choices we make every day have an effect on how resources are used. You will study different methods of operations management techniques (Japanese philosophies such as Kanban and JIT). Regular review and discussions of the business, economical and political news of the week will constantly add to your learning experiences.
How will I learn?
You will use and develop your communication, literacy and problem solving skills to analyse business and economic issues. You will use the Internet and wide ranging media sources for up-to-date information. Real business case-study scenarios will be used for analysis purposes as will traditional learning methods. You will be given an opportunity to make use of the department’s VLE (Moodle) site to assist in your learning. Traditional learning methods of regularly reviewing past paper examinations will also be undertaken so as to improve your examination technique.
What will I need?
This specification builds on the knowledge understanding and skills established in GCSE Business Studies and GCSE in Applied Business, but it is not a requirement that candidates should have previously gained a qualification in these subjects.
BS1 20% - The Business Framework - 1 hour 15 minutes Written Paper (80 UMS)
Short-answer questions – all compulsory
BS2 30% - Business Functions - 1 hour 45 minutes Written Paper (120 UMS)
Data response plus short-answer questions, all compulsory
BS3 25% - Business Decision-Making - 2 hour Written Paper (100 UMS)
Compulsory questions based on a case study
BS4 25% - Business Strategy and Practice - 2 hour Written Paper (100 UMS)
Section A – compulsory short-answer questions and problem-solving questions
Section B – one synoptic essay from a choice of 3
Many universities will accept Business Studies A level when applying for courses such as economics, business studies, marketing, management, and many other options. There may also be different trainee opportunities in a variety of business organizations.
