Product Design AS/A Level at Gloucester Academy
A Level Product Design cover four main topics, and you’ll study two of these each year.
You will use your creativity and imagination to design and make many products that solve real and relevant problems, considering your own and others’ needs, wants and values. The practical problem solving processes in this specification will encourage independent learning, creativity and innovation.
Within the first year, In ‘Materials, components and application’ - you’ll look at materials, production processes and the impact of cost and design. In ‘Learning through designing and making’ you’ll produce some coursework using your own design with a range of materials and media.
In the second year you’ll get to grips with ‘Design and manufacture’ - helping you to appreciate the relationship between design and technology, or form and function. ‘Design and making in practice’ is the practical, coursework part. You’ll make an Prototype product and record the processes that you went through.
You should ideally hold at least a grade B in GCSE Product Design along with a grade C in Mathematics and Science.
The qualification allows for a number of progression routes: Higher Education: The units provide a sound basis for progression to a range of higher education courses, such as; Product Design, Graphic Design, Industrial 3D Design, CAD/CAM, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, Manufacturing, but also courses linked to the Environment, Business, Advertising, Creative Arts, Multi Media Technology and Marketing.
Employment: Career opportunities are in Engineering, Product Design, Graphic Design, Marketing, Technical Sales, Buying, Interior/exhibition Design, Quality Control, Production Planning, Finance and Costing of the Manufacturing Process, use of CAD in Manufacturing etc.
You are required to purchase specific text books to support home study and exam preparation.
