Further Maths at Derby High School
Further Mathematics is an excellent course for those students interested in studying a mathematically based degree. The Further Mathematics course follows the Edexcel specification. This qualification represents two option choices, and it is important to note that students are committing themselves to two years of Maths. In the Lower Sixth, students complete 7 units: C1, C2, C3, FP1, S1, M1 and M2. The ‘C’ units are the core modules, which develop the mathematics met at GCSE to an increasingly higher level. The ‘FP’ unit is further pure, which is a Further Mathematics module. The ‘S’ unit is statistics, and the ‘M’ units are mechanics: these are the applied modules, where students solve problems linked with the real worldAt the end of the Lower Sixth, students can then decide whether they wish to continue and gain an A2 in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics, or they may choose to follow a lighter route and gain an A2 in Mathematics and an AS in Further Mathematics. In the Upper Sixth, those students who wish to gain an A2 in Mathematics and an AS in Further Mathematics will complete both the C4 and M3 units. If they wish to continue to gain an A2, they will also need to take FP2, FP3 and another applied unit. Please note: the AS work is completed in the U6 (so pupils do not finish at the end of L6). There is no coursework for this qualification, and the examinations take place in the summer term in both years.
Seven full GCSE passes (including English and Maths) at Grade B or above with at least a B in those subjects that the student wishes to study.
