Photography AS/A2 Level at The Helena Romanes School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

AS Photography is a new and exciting subject that will develop both your creativity and your practical skills. This course will help you gain a more informed understanding and appreciation of the photographic art form. It will help you to develop your imaginative skills, practical ability and technical knowledge as well as challenging you both intellectually and artistically.

The skills you will develop are: creative design skills, photographic skills- chemical and digital; 35mm SLR film camera skills; traditional darkroom practice and techniques; and digital image manipulation.

Photography also has links with many other subjects such as: Art and Design- creativity, imagination and project planning; Technology- practical skills with technical equipment; Sciencechemical photography; Media Studies- capturing and portraying an image, concept, issue or theme; ICT- digital photography and design; History- historical and contextual study of photography and related artists.

Course content

Photography will offer you the opportunity to work with both traditional and digital media. You will be expected to respond to briefs or themes, where you may go out on location shoots and from this, select and manipulate images to develop and communicate your own ideas.

Year 12 UNIT 1

COURSEWORK:

  • Induction Task
  • Exploration of media and techniques
  • Development of a given theme
  • Create a final piece

UNIT 2

EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT

Independent research and preparation on a theme set by Exam Board

Timed test under exam conditions (5 hours) with 3-4 weeks preparation

Year 13 UNIT 3

PERSONAL STUDY and PRACTICAL WORK

Research, evaluation and analysis of an aspect of Photography chosen by the student and based on/or inspired by previous coursework, 1000-3000 words dissertation presented as an essay or Powerpoint and practical work based on same theme.

UNIT 4

EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT

Independent research and preparation on a theme set by Board.

Timed test under exam conditions (15 hours) wit 3-6 weeks preparation.

 

 

Entry requirements

In order to study Photography at A Level you must have achieved 5 GCSEs A* - C.

Students wishing to study Photography at HRS will require a minimum of C grade in Art and Design or a true passion for the subject in interview. Access to your own camera will be an advantage.

Future opportunities

Photography AS/A level provides an excellent foundation for students considering further education or a career in the Arts or in any aspect of Photography.
