Functional Skills Level 2 (Maths) at Cromwell Community College

Course description

The assessment of functional skills in mathematics has been introduced to compliment the assessment of mathematics as a pure subject. It is intended that the use of mathematics to solve everyday problems should be assessed and so, although all areas of mathematics could be included, there is a concentration on the use of statistical data and techniques and the application of theoretical ideas connected with Shape, Space and Measure to solve practical problems. In addition to this is the overarching use of arithmetic so a good understanding of all number work is essential. Assessment is through a written paper consisting of some traditional short questions but also the use of extended, less well structured, questions where the ability to draw together many strands of mathematics is vital. To prepare for assessment you will need to work on many open ended tasks; completing many in your own time.
