Mathematics A Level at Wyke Sixth Form College

Course description

The course is aimed at students who have obtained a high GCSE grade and enjoy Mathematics, especially the algebra elements. Mathematics combines well with all the sciences, as well as Social Science, Business and IT based courses. A Level Mathematics is highly regarded by employers and universities.

Course content

The content covers a wide range of advanced algebraic techniques further developing the ideas of trigonometry and co-ordinate geometry covered in GCSE whilst introducing new ideas such as calculus. 

Both Mechanics and Statistics must be covered with students gaining a broad understanding of applied techniques from the Newton’s Laws of Motion to hypothesis testing with the Binomial and Normal Distributions.

The new course has the overarching themes of problem solving, Mathematical modelling, logical argument and proof.

Technology such as graphing tools, spreadsheets and advanced calculator techniques as well as being used to aid learning will also be needed to work on the investigation of a large data set used as part of the final assessment of the course. 

The new A level Mathematics course is designed to introduce the students to a wide range of Mathematical techniques and develop their logical, problem solving skills and ability to form structured arguments. The college has a team of specialist Mathematics teachers with a wealth of experience and the expertise to support students to achieve their potential.
