Religious Studies AS/A Level at Prendergast - Hilly Fields College

Course description

Religious Studies offers an intellectually challenging and academically rigorous course for 2017. The program will cultivate a religious literacy within participants as well as an academic ability to reason verbally and reach logical conclusions. Students will study two compelling components: Philosophy of Religion and Study of Religion. For the philosophy, students will engage in a wide range of important philosophical issues including the existence of God, the question of evil, as well as the nature of the soul and the body. Along side this students will explore the deeper questions involved in ethics, studying the best ethical theories put forward by scholars, ancient and modern, in an attempt to understand what drives the human condition toward ‘the good and the true’. The second component fosters a greater understanding of Christian Theology, and explores how the faith interacts with both society and the wider philosophical world. The necessary analytic and evaluative skills are developed with a view for successful university education. Students enjoy the ability to engage and criticise the subject content, as opposed to simply learning about it. Inventive, original, out-of-the-box thinking is an everyday occurrence in these classrooms.
