Animal Care Diploma Level 2 at New College Stamford

Course description

Develop the practical skills and experience you need to pursue a career working with animals. You will learn how to maintain animal accommodation, practical feeding, caring for exotic animals and the conservation and improvement of animal habitats. You will undertake compulsory work experience to expand your knowledge, working in a real-life Animal Care setting.You will be required to take part in 150 hours of work experience including work related experiences in the sector.This course is 40% theory vs 60% practical.

Course content

You will learn through a combination of theory and practical based learning including written assesments, group discussions, presentations and practical handling.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grades D/3 or above, including English and maths at grades D/3 or above.


The majority of the assessment is completed through ongoing assessment and practical handling of a variety of species.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress on the the Animal Management Extended Diploma Level 3 or employment as an Animal Technician, Animal Care Shelter Worker, Pet Shop Assistant or a Kennel or Cattery Worker .

Further information

The course contains very practical elements and sensible, weatherproof clothing is required, although overalls are provided. Sturdy footwear is essential, with no open-topped or heeled shoes. All jewellery must be taken off during practicals and hair tied back.
