Extended Project Qualification at Holgate Academy

Course description

Students who want to enrich their learning by completing a project based on a personal interest and want to develop their independent learning skills. The EPQ is equivalent to an AS level and universities hold it in high regard and some of our students have had university offers made due to the EPQ.

Course content

Students will need to attend lessons on study skills e.g. time management and how to research effectively.  The EPQ is completed in the students’ own time with a weekly meeting with their supervisor. They can choose to create an artefact e.g. a play or video with a 2000 word essay or they can complete a 5000 word essay on their topic.
Past projects have included writing, performing and directing a play, a study on the nature of fate and destiny and a study on the history of Taekwondo.
Students are taken to Nottingham Trent University for a session with the librarian about different sources of information and research skills. The nature of the project means there are lots of opportunities as students have to organise their project themselves.

Entry requirements

The EPQ is a level 3 qualification and students can chose to complete the EPQ alongside their higher education/ applied learning pathway.
