Course description


¨ Module 1 - Cell structure and transport in animals and plants

¨ Module 2 - Biological molecules, human disease and evolution

¨ Module 3 - Practical skills in biology


Entry requirements

Five GCSE grades A*-C including Grade C in Additional Science or GCSE Biology at higher tier entry.

(Grade C Foundation tier science students will be considered on exam performance)



 You will sit 2 external exams in Year 12, one in January and another in June.  If you go on to study A2, then you will take a further 2 external exams, again in January and June.  There is also a coursework element for both AS and A2.  You will complete coursework which tests your analytical, qualitative and evaluative skills.  At AS, 30% of the marks come from the first exam, 50% from the second exam and 20% from the coursework.


Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses that may overlap with Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Biology, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology such as a Doctor, Nurse, Science Technician or Marine Biologist.  Degrees in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, Physiotherapy, sports science, forensic science, beauty therapy, ecology

You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
