Engineering BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Archbishop Tenison's School

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a two year full time course in Engineering. It provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the design, development, manufacture and maintenance of engineering products and systems. The course practical, work related and follows a manufacturing pathway developed by BTEC. Learning is achieved through the completion of projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A levels and allows progression to higher education or employment. 

Course content

The skills acquired are transferrable and will prepare you for a diverse range of careers and employment. Academic study is combined with a strong practical element and includes projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations.

There are 6 core units:

  1. Electrical and electronic principles
  2. Mechanical principles and applications
  3. Mathematics
  4. Communications
  5. Health and Safety
  6. An engineering project

There are also 11 specialist units including:

  • Electronic devices and circuits
  • Computer aided drafting
  • Fabrication processes and technology
  • Welding

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths, English and Science – or 2 GCSEs plus Engineering BTEC Diploma Level 2 at Merit or above.

Future opportunities

The course will prepare you to study at degree or HND level. Students have progressed to leading universities to study Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering as well as Architecture. Alternatively students could go on to advanced apprenticeships.
