Computing BTEC Level 3 at Isle of Wight College

Course description

This course is designed to develop skills that will prepare successful students for Higher Education and careers in Computing and Business. Opportunities will exist to explore topics in both areas. It has been completely redesigned and updated for its launch in 2016.

Course content

A BTEC Level 3 Diploma is a practical, work-related course.  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.  Some tasks will be set and assessed by local employers. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you develop the skills you need to start a career.

The two year course will feature mandatory formal examinations and tasks set and marked by the Awarding Body. Success in all units is required to achieve an award in the qualification.

Entry requirements

You need to have gained at least one of the following:

  • Five GCSEs at C or better to include English and Maths; a science GCSE is also desirable. 1 Non-GCSE Full Level 2 qualification may be counted against the standard if the topic is relevant and an excellent grade has been achieved.
  • A recent BTEC First Diploma (NQF) at MM or above in a related subject, along with a recommendation from your coordinator, will be considered.
  • A good record of attendance and behaviour in school or College

You must present proof of the entry qualifications in order to enrol. Conditional offers may be made based on predicted grades.

Applicants will be required to attend, and successfully complete, a formal interview and assessment with Departmental staff which will assess their suitability for the course. At the end of the selection process you may be asked to complete preparatory material as a requirement of admission.

When you attend for interview you will be asked to bring some evidence of your work prior to this course which demonstrates an interest in computing studies and topics.

If you are using (or intend to use) entry qualifications gained through a course studied at the Isle of Wight College you will have to provide a reference from a senior member of staff in the department where you gained the qualification.

Future opportunities

This is a level 3, advanced course.  Achievement earns the UCAS points required for admission to Higher Education (equivalent to 3 A levels).

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diplomas are valued by employers who may provide apprenticeships, and higher education institutions (universities and colleges). The new course to be launched in September 2016 has been approved by a range of employers and universities.

If you decide on university or college you could take a degree or a BTEC Higher National in subjects such as:
