Electrical and Electronic Engineering Extended Diploma Level 3 (Year 2) at York College
This course is designed as an extension to the 90 Credit Diploma in Engineering. It will introduce you to a broader range of topics, building on the 90 Credit Diploma to give a total of
18 units, which could be relevant to your long term employment whether that is immediately after completing the course or after having completed a degree course.
There are 9 units to be studied during the year to add to the 90 Credit Diploma. At the end of the two years you will have an overall qualification that is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
On the Extended Diploma you will study further units of electrical, electronic and computer-based units to give a very broad understanding of the electrical and electronic industries and
theories. An example of some of the units that may be studied are shown below:
- Further Electrical Principles
- Industrial Process Control
- Analogue Electronics
- Digital Electronics
- Electrical Installation
- Further Maths
- Communications (mandatory)
- Engineering Project (mandatory) [2 units]
There is an opportunity to apply the knowledge you have when designing and developing your own ideas and producing an electrical/electronic project. You can even enter it into a regional
engineering competition which has been won by previous students. Some examples of previous projects are:
- Automated watering system
- Fish tank salinity monitor
- Vehicle speeding warning device
- Temperature monitoring system
- Greenhouse door control
- Graphic equaliser
- Caravan levelling system
- Motorcycle proximity alarm
You must have successfully completed the 90 Credit Diploma Level 3 in Engineering (Electrical/Electronic) and demonstrated a good attendance history and the ability and commitment to undertake the further studies that will be required to complete this course.
As with the 90 Credit Diploma, this is done continuously throughout the year by completing a series of assignments. Each of the units you study will have 3 to 4 assignments for you to complete to demonstrate your understanding.
Depending on the complexity of the project work, students will need to provide a contribution to the cost of their materials.
You can go on to study a higher level course such as a HNC/HND or onto a degree at university. It is always important to investigate the entry requirement of engineering degrees as many will require A Level Maths and Physics or a BTEC Further Maths unit within your Extended Diploma. You can also go onto an Advanced Apprenticeship in the field of engineering, or employment.
