Computing Level 3 Extended Diploma at Somerset College

Course description

In year 1 you study the Level 3 Foundation Diploma and in year 2 you study the Extended Diploma. Upon successful completion of year 1, you will continue to year 2.

This course is equivalent to three A Levels and provides a sound grounding in IT. It also provides you with specialist knowledge of IT troubleshooting and repair, computer systems and computer network design and management and IT security. You will develop core technical and practical skills on this course which will be invaluable to you at degree level study or in employment. 

You will study a number of specialist modules which could include:

  • Principles of computer science
  • Fundamentals of computer systems
  • Software design & development project
  • IT systems security & encription
  • Business applications of social media
  • The impact of computing
  • Human computer interaction
  • Website development
  • Mobile Apps development
  • Virtualisation

During the course you will have the chance to attend technology workshop sessions and to meet professionals working in IT. This raises your awareness of how to use your skills in industry. 

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths or a merit overall on a Level 2 Extended Certificate, or an intermediate GNVQ in ICT or other relevant subject.


A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used, including computer-based projects, case studies, tutorials, practical sessions and taught classroom sessions. Written, practical assignments and examinations are used for assessment purposes.  

Future opportunities

You could progress on to a Foundation degree or Honours degree at Bridgwater & Taunton College in Computing & Internet Technologies.

You could move into employment in a relevant role, or seek an Apprenticeship in IT.
