Design & Technology (Resistant Materials) AS & A Level at John Leggott Sixth Form College
You will develop your design and modelling skills and your knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods so you are able to design and make a working product. You will use wood, metals and plastics to create full-size working prototypes or furniture.
- Unit 1: Portfolio of Skills:
You will learn to research, design, develop, make, test and evaluate to high degree of competence. This is a skills based learning unit which is teacher led.
- Unit 2: Design
and Technology in Practice:
Theoretical core knowledge about materials, processes, environmental issues, manufacturing and modern materials and technologies. This results in a 1.5 hour written exam.
A Level Course
- Unit 3: Designing for the Future:
Theoretical core knowledge developing from Unit 2 where you will learn about industrial practice, sustainability, design history, key designers and designing for future generations. This results in a 2 hour written exam.
- Unit 4: Commerical Design:
A major piece of coursework where you will demonstrate all your learning and skills from Unit 1. This project must focus on the needs of a client of a target market and you will lead the project from inception through to the testing of your constructed prototype.
Ideally a grade C or above in GCSE Design Technology, as well as GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above. If you haven’t studied design at GCSE then you must demonstrate a genuine commitment and interest; showing a portfolio of design work. GCSE average 5.0 or above.
50% coursework, 50% exams
Many students go on to further study in areas including product design, industrial design, engineering and furniture design. You can move directly into employment or further training in the design industry and there are also courses in computer gaming design and various motorsport design degrees.
Annual trips include a visit to the Degree Show at Central Saint Martin’s College and a visit to the Design Museum in London.
