English Language and Literature AS Level at Highbury College

Course description

This A Level is for those interested in studying language and literature, who enjoy reading and creative writing and who wish to gain a qualification useful for both employment and further education.

The programme complements other programmes of study, contributing breadth, academic support and UCAS points.

It can be combined with other AS/A2 Levels or a vocational qualification.

Course content

The programme covers the study of both language and literature, with the opportunity to create your own texts.

Language work analyses speech in different contexts, while literary work involves the study of three texts with analytical and creative responses.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE grades A-C with grade B or above in English Language (essential) and Literature (preferable).


There are two examinations for the AS Level.

Future opportunities

The AS Level is a standalone qualification or can contribute as the first year of an A Level award.

It is useful for both employment and further education adding UCAS points for university applications.

Career opportunities may be enhanced and the subject is particularly relevant for degrees in Humanities and the Media.

The programme promotes effective communication skills and is an academic qualification well respected by employers and higher education establishments.
