If you are sympathetic and caring, interested in the wellbeing of vulnerable people, good at communicating and working as part of a team, a career in health and social care will be fulfilling and satisfying. Health Care Workers work in care settings such as care homes or clinics, and can include anything from helping people get dressed to transporting them to and from a residential home.
A qualification in health and social care will equip you with the essential skills necessary for different types of work in hospitals, community, doctors’ surgeries, hospices, private clinics or opticians. Social care might include helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled or the elderly or as a personal care assistant, helping someone in their everyday life. The course will cover the tasks performed by a care worker, day care assistant or healthcare assistant and will help develop a professional working style, safe working practices, awareness of the work environment and communicating effectively with colleagues and customers.

You will cover units such as:
- Introduction to communication in Health & Social Care
- Introduction to Personal Development
- Introduction to Equality and Inclusion
- Introduction to Duty of Care
- Principles of Safeguarding and Protection
- The role of a Health and Social Care Worker
- Implementation of the Person Centred Approaches
- Health and Safety
- Handling information and Data Protection
- Practical duties like blood pressures, pulses, medications, wound dressing, taking blood etc.
You will be assessed using a combination of assignments, online tests, oral questioning, a portfolio of evidence and by practical demonstration and observation of your on-the-job activities. You will attend classes for a few hours one day a week, and spend a minimum of 30 hours per week at work.
You could choose to progress onto Higher Education in subjects like nursing or midwifery and practitioner roles in the care sector or management roles in health and social care settings in the community.
