Art and Design A Level at New Charter Academy & 6th Form

Course description

Do you enjoy being inventive and making work that is personal and unique? Do you want to develop your imagination and creativity? Do you want to create something new? If you can answer yes to these questions, art and design is an ideal subject for you. The AS course is for anyone who would like to continue to develop their art and design skills and knowledge as they move into A-level study. We offer a broad-based AS and A2 level art and design course. That seeks to extend students ability in general art and design through specific skills based projects.

Course content

We offer a broad-based AS and A level art and design course that seeks to extend students’ ability through specific skills based projects. The course develops students’ observational drawing skills, as they develop ideas and study areas of personal interest. They are taught to create intelligent pieces which link their research and analysis of art movements and specialisms. Through New Charter Academy’s Art department you will receive an academic understanding of art’s place in society and practical skills that will enable you to operate at degree level.

Art and design courses equip you with a combination of practical skills mixed with theory, transferrable skills used in Art and Design includes:

  • Imagination, creativity and resourcefulness
  • Critical awareness of self and external factors and the ability to be reflective
  • Interpersonal and social skills
  • An appreciation of diversity
  • Creative problem solving
  • Teamworking
  • The ability to work independently
  • Information and research skills

  • Visits to galleries and a potential for working with practicing artists are a valuable part of this course

Entry requirements

You need to meet the stated Academy entry requirements for AS/A2 courses and have a B grade or above in GCSE art (or equivalent).


You can study one of these areas to create a portfolio:

1.  Art, craft and design

2.  Fine art

3. Graphic communication

4. Textile design

5. Three-dimensional design

6. Photography

An externally set  task of 10 hours is also assessed for the final 40% of the qualification
