German Edexcel A Level at Littleover Community School

Course description

Learning a foreign language is essential in our globalised world and brings enhanced cultural, travel and employment opportunities. 

Qualities Required:

  • Have achieved a good grade at GCSE level.
  • Have an interest in languages.
  • Have a willingness to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Have the ability to organise and express ideas and arguments logically in the foreign language.





Course content

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation

Students should be able to:

  • understand main points, gist and detail from spoken and written material
  • infer meaning from complex spoken and written material
  • assimilate and use information from spoken and written sources, including material from online media
  • summarise information from spoken sources, reporting key points and subject matter
  • translate from German into English.


Paper 2: Written response to works and translation

Students should be able to:

  • develop a detailed understanding and appreciation of the works studied, by writing critical and analytical responses in the language of study to the works, taken from the prescribed list provided
  • produce responses that relate to features such as the form and the technique of presentation, key concepts and issues and the social context, as appropriate to the work studied
  • present viewpoints; develop arguments; persuade; and analyse and evaluate
  • manipulate language accurately through translating an unseen passage from English into German.


Paper 3: Speaking

Students should be able to demonstrate:

  • knowledge and understanding of the cultural context by giving ideas, examples and information on one of the themes and on a chosen subject of interest they have researched linked to the social and cultural context of the language studied
  • the ability to analyse aspects of the cultural context by presenting and justifying valid arguments, viewpoints and conclusions
  • the ability to interact and hold a natural and fluent discourse
  • skill in manipulating language accurately
  • the ability to respond to written language in speech.

Entry requirements

Littleover Community School Sixth Form specialises in AS and A2 Level Courses - we do not offer any alternative/vocational courses. Regardless of which 'wave' of the ongoing A Level reforms each subject is in, we will expect all students to sit AS examinations at the end of Year 12 and A2 examinations at the end of Year 13.

We therefore expect all students to enrol to study 4 AS Levels in Year 12. Most students will then drop one subject at the end of Year 12 having completed the AS Level qualification, continuing with the other 3 to A2 level.

The minimum entry criteria for Littleover Community School Sixth Form is 5 A*-C/9-5 grades at GCSE including Maths and English Language. Students who achieve a grade 4 in Maths or English Language will be considered on an individual basis. However, the vast majority of our students will achieve 8 or more A*-C/9-5 grades with A*-8/9-6 in the subjects they wish to study at A Level. If students plan to study subjects that they have not studied at GCSE level we will expect A*-B/9-6 in subjects that have a similar skills set.

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation:

  • Written examination: 2 hours
  • 40% of the qualification
  • 80 marks

Assessment overview

Students are not permitted access to a dictionary during the examination.

The examination is made up of:

  • Section A: Listening (30 marks)
  • Section B: Reading (30 marks)
  • Section C: Translation into English (20 marks)


Paper 2: Written response to works and translation

  • Written examination: 2 hours and 40 minutes
  • 30% of the qualification
  • 120 marks

Assessment overview

This paper includes a translation exercise and two essays on either two literary texts, or one literary text and one film (students must not answer questions on two films).

Students are not permitted access to a dictionary or any documentation relating to the works during the examination.

  • Section A: Translation (20 marks)
  • Section B: Written response to works (literary texts) (50 marks)


Paper 3: Speaking

  • Internally conducted and externally assessed
  • Total assessment time: between 21 and 23 minutes, which includes a single period of 5 minutes’ formal preparation time
  • 30% of the qualification
  • 72 marks

Assessment overview

Students complete two tasks. Task 1 is worth 30 marks and Task 2 is worth 42 marks.

Future opportunities

Language skills are highly valued by employers within a wide range of job sectors.

  • Quote from Leeds University: "Language graduates have the best graduation employment record after medicine and veterinary".
  • Many languages graduates go into business, banking, journalism marketing and management roles within a wide range of organisations as well as teaching.
  • Many universities offer languages as a subsidiary subject in combined degrees. Many courses offer students the chance to study abroad for a year, funded by the EU.
  • A Level language study encompasses many key skills such as communication, cultural awareness, independence, as well as research and analytical skills.

    • Welcome to Littleover Community School Sixth Form and thank you for visiting our website. The Sixth Form was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in both of their most recent inspections when it was part of the highly successful Millennium Centre Post 16 Partnership along with Derby Moor Community Sports College.

      In September 2013 this partnership came to an end to enable Littleover Community School to deliver its own sixth form courses independently. This coincided with the opening of a brand new, purpose built sixth form centre. We have a reputation for academic excellence with students performing considerably higher than national averages year after year.

      Approximately 95% of our students go on to study at university having completed a range of AS and A level subjects. While we are proud of our high academic standards, we also recognise the importance of providing students with an enjoyable and enriching experience throughout their time in the Sixth Form.  We offer a wide range of enrichment sessions in addition to a detailed tutorial programme designed to broaden the experiences of students, develop students as well rounded individuals and prepare them thoroughly for life at university and beyond.
