Course description

The perfect course if you want a career working with animals. Learn through a mixture of theory and practical work in a range of specialist animal units.

Course content

Learn through a mixture of theory and practical work in a range of specialist animal units. You will also do an internal and external work placement.

The course presents opportunities for a range of trips to zoos, wildlife centres and even a safari in South Africa! Subject areas include:

• Animal science, husbandry and welfare

• Handling and restraint techniques

• Understand and promote animal health

• Nutrition and feeding

• Zoology

• Animal training and behaviour

• Wildlife management and rehabilitation

• Dog grooming

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: English 4 and maths at 3 or above, and 3 other GCSEs grade 4 or above.

Assessment

• Written assignments

• Presentations

• Practical work

Financial information

As a full time student you should not need to pay any course or examination fees (under 19).

There may be a cost for equipment, educational visits, printing etc.

Future opportunities

Opportunities for employment including work in:

  • vets,
  • laboratories,
  • animal welfare establishments,
  • wild life centres, and
  • commercial organisations.

Successful students have progressed to employment in the police, RAF, veterinary nursing and dog grooming.

    • Animal care and equine students can take advantage of the facilities at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre, Glossop.
       
      The modern centre caters for 150 horses and a variety of other animals. It helps students learn essential practical skills.
       
      Situated on the edge of the stunning High peak National Park, Hargate Hill also features tranquil lakes and 150 acres of beautiful countryside.
