Course description

The A Level Philosophy course has been designed to enable students to gain a thorough grounding in key philosophical concepts, themes and techniques. Taking the A Level Philosophy course will develop a range of transferable skills, which can be applied far beyond the study of philosophy and into a range of academic and career areas.

Students will study topics such as Reason and Experience, Morality and Ethics, The Value of Art and Philosophy of Religion, Freewill and Determinism, and Political Philosophy.

Philosophy has applications in a wide range of careers, as it promotes critical thinking, rationality, problem solving and independent study. Specifically it would benefit in areas such as law, politics, medicine and journalism.

Many influential politicians such as David Cameron, Ed Milliband and Bill Clinton studied philosophy. The study of philosophy also encourages a depth of thought and enquiry into the world that has fascinated many writers and artists.
