Childcare (Children’s Play, Learning & Development) at Blackfen School for Girls

Course description

This qualification provides an element of sector specialism by developing a primary common core of knowledge in the sector. It is particularly appropriate for students with an interest in progressing to a career involved with working with children in an early year’s (0-8 years) related field, who want to pursue an academic route alongside other qualifications.


Course content

Unit 1 Child Development. In this unit, you will learn about the ways in which growth and development are interlinked. How children develop in the five main areas-physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional. You will learn about 17 different theorists and their theories, why and how children develop and behave the way they do. Finally you will learn a range of factors that seem to influence the development of individual children. Exam 1 hour 45 min.   Unit 2 Play and Learning – coursework – During the study of this unit, you will discover that there are many different types of play and different way it can be organised. You will also learn about the way early years professionals work to organise, plan and implement purposeful play activities.   Unit 4 Health and Safety in Early Years Settings :coursework – This unit looks at the principles of preventing the spread of infection and how to create safe, secure environments, both indoors and outdoors. Unit 8 Safeguarding in Early Years – coursework – It is important for you to know about the laws that early year’s settings must comply with to protect children. You will learn how to recognise abuse, the signs and symptoms and how to report any concerns. You will look at abuse case studies.   Unit 9 Observation, Assessment & Planning – coursework - In this unit you will have a good understanding  through child observations. You will learn the importance, the range of observation methods and how to present records of observations. You will also interpret and evaluate observations and inform the planning process to support children’s play and learning.    UNIT 10 Supporting Children’s Literacy and Numeracy Development – coursework – This unit will give you understanding of literacy and numeracy development in children aged 2-5 years and how you can support them.



A Pass, Merit or Distinction must be achieved in each unit. Unit 1 which is an exam counts for 33% of the qualification.  All other units which are coursework count for 67% of the qualification over the 2 years. You will be assessed through written assignments, presentations, case studies, observations and practical work. You must also complete 50 hours in a placement, this can be in a school or nursery working with children aged 0-8 years

Future opportunities

Progression to university to study Primary Education and Early Years degrees. Progress onto Further Education to undertake the BTEC diploma qualification in Children’s Play, Learning & Development or The NVQ Early Year Educator diploma and gain Early Years Educator status.  Completion of the course can also provide opportunities for entry into professional training such as Primary School Teacher, Paediatric Nursing, Nursery Nurse, Early Years Management, Midwifery and Social Work.
