Functional Skills Level 2 (English) at Cromwell Community College
From September 2010 all pupils are required to sit exams in Functional Skills. These skills are mostly covered in your Maths, English and ICT lessons but examined separately. Functional skills can be obtained at Levels 1 (equivalent to GCSE at D-G) and Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE at A*-C). English WJEC—Codes: 08081 (02) (reading) 0802 (02) (writing) Functional Skills is not like the GCSE for English. It is much more focused on how people have to use their skills from English in the real world. For example, students will be required to write letters about subjects related to them which may be something they will have to do later in life. They will also be asked to collate information from texts in order to help them for tasks they may have to do a future career. There is a cross over with the skills they are to show as through English lessons students are taught these ‘functional’ skills from an early age, however, the Functional Skills qualification does not involve any literature and does not require any coursework – it is simply an assessment of how well students can use their English skills to be efficient in the world outside of school. The listening element of this course is internally assessed. The other sections are written exams.
Delivery: Part of a full-time programme
