Philosophy, Religion and Ethics A level at Nower Hill High School
Who is the course for?
For students who want to be able to develop skills in logical reasoning and analytical thinking, in order to arrive at coherent conclusions about controversial and challenging issues.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught using a variety of methods including debate, research and using readings, booklets and online sources.
The beliefs, teachings and differences within one religion, philosophical arguments, ethical theory and applied ethics. This will mean exploring the influence of religion on society, ethics and philosophy as well as gaining an understanding of philosophical and ethical schools of thought. Contemporary and thought-provoking issues will be examined. You must be able to critically analyse the subject content and form lines of argument critiquing the scholars studied.
You are not required to have studied Philosophy & Ethics in advance, but if you have studied PRE as a GCSE subject, you must have achieved Grade C or above. To achieve a grade C or above at A Level you will need to be able to write evaluative essays, and to think independently and conduct your own research. You will be challenged to think about demanding philosophical ideas and understand the logic of these arguments and to critically evaluate ideas.
This course is assessed entirely through examination.
There are two assessment objectives:
- AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: religious, philosophical and/or ethical thought and teaching; the influence of beliefs, teachings and practices on individuals, communities and societies; the cause and significance of similarities and differences in belief, teaching and practice.
- AO2: Analyse and evaluate aspects of the above, including their significance, influence and study
PRE is a rigorous academic subject that relates to many further education degree courses, and careers in Law, Journalism, Social Work, Research Skills, Psychology, Bio-Ethics, any related disciplines involving problem solving and research skills.
