Business Studies A Level at New Charter Academy & 6th Form

Course description

The Business Studies course is the brand new updated A-level from Edexcel and includes elements of both Business and Economics, meaning it’s the perfect choice for students wanting a job working in business or finance. In year 12, students enrolling on the course are introduced to business in Themes 1 and 2 through building knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. In year 13, breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, with applications to a wider range of contexts and more complex business information, are developed in Themes 3 and 4, requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

In recent years, higher education institutions and employers have consistently flagged the need for students to develop a range of transferable skills to enable them to respond with confidence to the demands of undergraduate study and the world of work.

Students that study Business will enhance their cognitive skills and develop real-life experience suited to any further education course at University – particularly Business Studies, Business Management, Marketing, Accounting, Media, Economics, or Psychology.

In choosing Business Studies you will have the opportunity to work in a small group to start up your own business idea through the ‘Young Enterprise Scheme’, and actually make and produce a product you will sell in school, around Ashton Markets and at “The Christmas Markets” in Manchester. What’s even more exciting is you’ll get to keep the profit. This project is an excellent example to use when writing up your personal statement, looks great on your CV and great to talk about in any University or job interview.

Links to local, national and international businesses will be used to enhance the learning process through trips and visits. Getting to know real business and real-life case-studies is Edexcel’s new focus for this year. Instead of using ‘made-up’ case-studies of fictional business we will study real businesses such as ‘McDonalds’, ‘Easyjet’, ‘Bank’, ‘Dr Dre Beats’, ‘JD’, ‘Costa Coffee’, ‘Primark’, ‘Subway’, and many more.
