Entry into the Public Services Level 1 at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

This qualification is designed for students looking to gain entry into the Armed Forces. The course is largely practical, preparing individuals for the physical entry requirements of the services. You will focus on skills and knowledge of wellbeing and fitness, develop your knowledge on careers in the armed forces, develop personal skills, self-management and practical teamwork skills, as well as improving your health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public services. You’ll also achieve a Level 1 qualification for entry into the Public Services.

Course content

The course is largely practical, preparing individuals for the physical entry requirements of the services. You will focus on skills and knowledge of wellbeing and fitness for public service, develop your knowledge on public service careers, develop personal skills, self-management and practical teamwork skills for the services, as well as improving your health and fitness for entry into the uniformed public services.

  • Map Reading Using Ordnance Survey Maps Self-Management Skills
  • Planning and Participating in Military Events
  • Introduction to Expedition Skills
  • Developing Personal Skills for Leadership
  • Assisting the Public in Emergencies

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade E or above including Maths and English or Entry Level qualification and Entry Level Maths and English.


You will be assessed through a variety of methods including on-line testing, assignments, practical assessments in a real working environment and working on reception.

Future opportunities

Completion of this course may lead on to entry into the Military Forces.
