English Language and Literature A Level at Whitley Academy

Course description

The course provides an exciting experience of a variety of spoken and written texts. It also provides a full integration of literary and linguistic study and provides an opportunity for students to respond creatively to texts in both coursework and examinations.

Course content

The AS consists of two assessment units:

There are two units: one examination and one piece of coursework.

The examination will require candidates to answer two questions based on the study of set texts and of the features of writers’/ speakers’ uses of language and the creation of meaning.

The coursework module requires candidates to apply both analytical and creative techniques to explore ways literary texts are reinvented and reinterpreted for different audiences.
 

The A2 consists of two additional units:

There are two units: one examination and one piece of coursework.

The examination requires candidates to study drama texts and the ways that speech is represented.

The coursework module requires candidates to apply analytical techniques to explore the ways literary texts are constructed and then to use this knowledge to write creatively.

Entry requirements

A minimum of Grade B in English Language and/ or Literature is a requirement to join the course.
 
Year 12 students must achieve at least Grade D at the end of the AS segment of the course in order to proceed. In addition, prospective Year 12 students are asked to complete a holiday task to prepare them for the start of the course.

 

Future opportunities

This course could lead to a degree in English Literature , English Language or creative writing as well as courses or careers in varying aspects of the media, publishing or communication, and teaching.
