Music AS/A-Level at Shire Oak Academy
In Yr 12: During the AS Music course, students will complete three components: Two components will be non-examined assessments which are externally assessed and the final written exam component will be taken during the summer exam season.
In Y13: The A2 Music course follows the same three components as the AS course, two components being non examined and externally assessed, however the written exam is longer, assessing the topic in more depth this being.
Prospective AS/A2 Music students must have obtained either GCSE music at grade C or above or grade 5 theory and grade 5 practical in their first instruments.
- Performing - 30% - externally assessed
- Composing - 30% - externally assessed
- Appraising - 40% - 1hr 30min written exam
- Component 3: Appraising - 40% - 2hr written exam
Music provides an excellent choice of A level for further study in any subject at higher education. Universities see Music A level as a very desirable qualification because it shows an aptitude for independent and long term learning. UCAS also recognise this by giving UCAS points to any music practical or theory grade at grade 6 and higher.
