Course description

Further Maths is like Maths except that there is more of it and it is more challenging. The course develops and extends the topics covered in the Maths A level. If you really enjoy Mathematics, and you are good at it, then Further Mathematics is worth considering especially if you want to go to University to study a subject that has some Mathematics content. If you decide to take the AS level in Further Maths you will study this in year 1 alongside AS Maths, taking the decision maths unit as part of your AS Maths course. This involves topics such as Algorithms, Route Inspection and Critical Path Analysis. The full A level further Maths is dependent upon you continuing with Maths A level in your second year.

Course content

AS Level Further Maths This course is made up of the following units: Further Pure 1 This involves a range of pure maths topics such as Series, Complex Numbers, Coordinate Systems, Matrix Algebra and Proof. Mechanics 1 This involves the study of vectors, statics and kinematics and links in with Physics A level. Statistics 1 This involves the methods of data analysis and probability

Entry requirements

You will need at least a grade A at GCSE Maths.


Each unit is assessed by a 90 minute exam and your final grade is based on the total mark.  There is no coursework.
