Sport (Performance & Excellence) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at South Cheshire College

Course description

If you are interested in a professional, coaching or management role in the world of football, then this customised Level 3 Extended Diploma is for you. The course incorporates units from our other Sports National Diplomas, but with a strong emphasis on football as the main sport. Units covered include football related health and safety, training and fitness, football coaching, fitness testing, practical football, nutrition, psychology for football, football injuries, talent identification and development in football, rules and regulations in football and the footballer’s lifestyle. You will also gain work-based experience in the sport.

Course content

This course looks at the various roles within sport and sports teams. Within a modern team there will be a range of professionals supporting the athlete. These range from Coach, Performance analyst, Sports psychologist, Fitness trainer, Sports therapist /Masseur and Nutritionist.

The course will investigate the skills required to gain opportunities in these professions and offers you an opportunity to develop skills while focusing on your preferred sport, be it football, netball, rugby, volleyball, athletics or basketball. You will have the opportunity to visit national centres to support your development. Speak to professionals in your chosen sport regarding your assignment work.

Core units to be studied are:

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
  • The physiology of sport
  • Assessing risk in sport
  • Fitness training
  • Programming and testing for sport and exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Psychology for sports performance
  • Technical and tactical Skills in sport
  • The athlete's lifestyle
  • Sports coaching
  • Practical team sports
  • Sports injuries and massage

Other elements of the course include:

  • Enrichment/College sporting activities
  • Support in gaining additional awards in an area that will enhance your career opportunities, for example coaching, nutrition or massage

The course involves both the theoretical and practical aspects of the role you wish to gain. This will help you to start developing both the technical skills required for the role plus the analytical, management and creative skills required to work in sport.

Entry requirements

For the Extended Diploma (2 years) you will need a minimum of: i) 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language/Literature (or L2 functional literacy), ii) or a Level 2 Diploma (Merit) + 3 GCSEs grade A*-C, iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate (Merit) + 4 GCSEs grade A*-C, plus at least a grade D in GCSE Maths (or L1 functional numeracy pass).

For the Subsidiary Diploma (1 year) you will need a minimum of: i) 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language/Literature (or L2 functional literacy), ii) or a Level 2 Diploma (Pass) + 2 GCSEs grade A*-C, iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate (Pass) + 3 GCSEs grade A*-C, plus at least a grade E in GCSE Maths.

Future opportunities

Students who are successful have the option of going into a degree programme in Sports Science or Coaching and from this career paths can include Performance analyst, Sport or exercise scientist, coach, Nutritionist or Sports psychologist.
