Construction Contracting Operations Apprenticeship at York College

Course description

This is a structured programme of training and development which allows career progression within many disciplines of Construction Operations (eg Estimating, Quantity Surveying, Planning and Site Management).

Students will begin to develop a broader knowledge of the business functions by working in numerous business areas in both support service departments and as part of operational teams.

Course content

NVQ Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations

Mandatory units:
Operate health, safety and welfare systems in construction
Prepare programmes and schedules of work in construction
Operate project information systems in construction
Develop and maintain working relationships and personal development in construction

Optional units:
Prepare for, collect and present survey data in construction
Record the condition of property in construction
Integrate and control project design information in construction
Prepare drawings and schedules in construction
Prepare and process invitations to tender in construction
Prepare estimates, bids and tenders in construction
Prepare for work operations in construction
Implement contract work in construction
Establish and maintain the dimensional control of construction works
Prepare for and carry out physical testing in construction
Assess, plan and monitor project methods and progress in construction
Monitor, maintain and improve supplies of material in construction
Prepare and monitor costs and accounts in construction
Prepare proposals and obtain feedback for the provision of products and services in construction

Entry requirements

It is recommended that applicants should have a minimum of 3 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C (grade 4) or above including Maths and English.

Assessment

For the NVQ you will build up a portfolio with the support of an assessor. This is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that demonstrates your skills and ability, including a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks. Assessment of the Diploma consists of practical tasks, observations, oral questioning, written questions, assignments and written tests.

Future opportunities

On completion of this Apprenticeship students can progress on to HNC qualifications and careers in the construction industry such as site management, estimating, design, planning and other technical roles.
