Public Services 90 Credit / Extended Diploma at Sandwell College

Course description

This one or two-year course is mainly for school leavers, or anyone wishing to pursue a career in one of the Uniformed Public Services such as the Police Service, Fire Service, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army, Royal Air Force, Prison Service, and UK Border Agency. The course also has links to wider public services such as HM Revenue & Customs or the Ambulance Service.

Course content

This is an interesting and inspiring course offering a mixture of theory and practical aspects of public service work and outdoor activities. Learners will cover a wide range of topics from Politics and Law through to Adventurous Activities and Physical Fitness.
There are eight units of study for the subsidiary diploma specifically relating to public services, including Police Power, Leadership and Teamwork, and Physical Preparation for Entry to the Uniformed Public Services.
There are 11 units of study for the extended diploma, relating to public services and wider services, including Understanding War, Conflict and Terrorism, Crime and its Effects, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Land Navigation.
On completion of the Extended Diploma learners achieve the equivalent of 3 A levels and 120 – 360 UCAS points.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs, including English at grade C and above, or a full Level 2 qualification in Public Services. Prospective learners will be initially assessed on their level of Maths and English and will need to attend an interview with the course tutor.


During the course all work is assessed through coursework, role plays, presentation and practical skills.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can go on to apply for university courses such as the BA in Policing or Criminology. Alternatively you could apply to join the uniformed public services.
