Women's and Men's Hairdressing Level 2 Diploma at Exeter College
You will be working in the college's commercial salon’s performing a variety of basic hairdressing services on our clients. We recommend you gain a salon placement to supplement your practical course experience.
You will be expected to ensure that you have a range of clients or models for all practical classes on which to develop your skills. Assessments for all practical observations are graded and online examinations contribute to your overall qualification.
There are practical and theoretical classes which will help each student develop a portfolio of evidence for verification. There is some case study/project work. Practical skills are developed on fellow students - once a level of competence is reached clients are to be used for assessment. Balance of course 40% theory/60% practical.
You will study the following technical and core units:
- Follow health and Safety practice in the salon
- Client consultations for hair services
- Shampoo and conditioning the hair and scalp
- Promote products and services
- Cut women and men's hair
- Colour and lighten hair
- The art of dressing hair
- Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
- Salon reception duties
You need four GCSEs at Grade D or above (including maths and English), OR Level 1 Diploma Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector (with Functional Skills English and Maths at Level 1), and also be passionate about being a hairdresser.
You will be assessed practically, theoretically and orally in all areas. Testimonials may be required as evidence in some areas. Complete portfolios are verified and should include assessment books, case studies, projects, and theoretical papers. Some units have external on line test papers.
You will need to purchase a personal kit and uniform. You are responsible for providing your own working resources.
You could progress onto Level 3 Hairdressing or you will be able to enter a profession that is in demand everywhere in the high street.
