BTEC First Art and Design at Acland Burghley School

Course description

This is a work-related qualification designed to provide you with a choice of routes into further education or employment. A BTEC First Certificate is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s. Course content You will produce a portfolio of work showing your 2D and 3D skills and your understanding of how practising artists and designers communicate their ideas. Your portfolio will evidence your ability to use different media & materials and will show your understanding of how specialist approaches are used in the workplace. You will complete a range of set projects that are designed to give you the experience of working for real clients. Development skills • Problem solving • Independent and collaborative learning • Creative and critical thinking • Effective visual communicators Classroom activities • 2-D Visual language – painting, photography, digital media, drawing, collage, printmaking. • 3D Visual language – constructing, carving, joining, forming, modelling & sewing. • Critical and contextual studies relating to artists and designers from a range of art movements and contemporary practice. • Specialist workshops delivered by visiting artists and designers. How will I be assessed? The course consists of 8 units of work that are addressed within five different projects over two years. Three projects are completed in Y10, one is completed at the beginning of Y11. There is one exam unit, set by the exam board, beginning in the spring term of Y11. Head of Department: Ms Frye
