Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at Lady Manners School

Course description

This is a lively and practical course which will suit those enthusiastic about theatre. However, essay writing practice is required, as assessment by examination makes up 40% of the marks.

Course content

Component 1: Drama and Theatre

  • Study two set plays
  • Analyse and evaluate the work of live theatre makers

Component 2: Creating Original Drama

  • Perform a piece of devised drama which must be influenced by the work and methodologies of one prescribed practitioner.

Component 3: Making Theatre (Practical)

  • Practical exploration of 3 different plays
  • Exploration of the methodology of prescribed practitioners
  • Perform scripted extracts

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE Drama. Students who did not study Drama at GCSE or those who attain a grade C in Drama at GCSE must have a Grade 4 in English.


Component 1:

  • Written exam: 3 hours 80 marks 40% of A Level

Component 2:

  • Working notebook (40 marks)
  • Devised performance (20 marks) 60 marks in total 30% of A Level

Component 3: Making Theatre (Practical)

  • Performance (40 marks)
  • Reflective report (20 marks) 60 marks in total 30% of A Level

Future opportunities

The excellent communication skills developed by Drama students are valued in many career areas. This course is also good preparation for studying Drama at university and/or for a career in theatre or media.
