This course will appeal to you if you prefer to learn science through practical work. This course gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for employment. This qualification also provides career development opportunities for those already in work.
BTEC First qualifications consist of mandatory units and optional units. Optional units are designed to provide a focus to the qualification and give more specialist opportunities in the sector. The mandatory units are Chemistry and Our Earth, Energy and Our Universe, and Biology and Our Environment. The optional units are Health Applications of Life Science, Working in a Science-Based Organisation, The Living Body, Chemical Analysis and Detection, Application of Physical Science, Science and the World of Work, and Exploring Our Universe.
You will need English and Maths skills at Level 1. If you do not have evidence of your English and Maths levels you will be given an online English and Maths assessment after you submit your application. You may also be asked to complete a piece of free writing or a vocational assessment. If you meet the entry requirements you will then be offered an interview with a tutor to discuss the course.
You will be internally assessed through assignments set and marked by your lecturers. Work is graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction for each unit. The grades are then averaged to get the final overall grade. You must achieve 60 credits to pass the course.
