French A-Level at Christ's College Finchley
At Christ’s College Finchley, we believe that languages are essential to the development of every student. Learning a language not only stimulates the child’s imagination but also helps them to develop skills and knowledge that can be used in all the other subjects across the curriculum.
French AS and A2 follow the OCR syllabus. Latin is also taught to pupils as a non-compulsory subject after school and more and more pupils are taking up this option.
All classrooms are equipped with an interactive whiteboard linked to the internet, allowing pupils to take a more active role in their learning. The department also has a dedicated ICT suite, where pupils are encouraged to work independently on language research projects and useful web-sites.
The department’s link Governor is Nick Byrne, who teaches languages at the London School of Economics. He also works closely with the Routes into Languages programme and therefore pupils have the possibility to follow a course or a programme outside of their usual learning environment. Pupils also enjoy attending a French conference in London, aimed at developing their language skills.
For studying at Advanced Level
Applicants must achieve a minimum average GCSE score of 40 points (where A* counts 58 points, A as 52, B as 46, C as 40, etc.). Students who have studied at BTEC Level 2 must have achieved a high Merit grade as a minimum. In addition there are GCSE requirements for individual subjects, where they are oversubscribed. Where subjects are oversubscribed, places will be offered to students in rank order of their average point score.
Subject specific requirements
A Grade B is the normal requirement in the subject you wish to study at Advanced Level but a Grade B does not guarantee acceptance on to the course. Where a course is under-subscribed consideration will be given to those candidates who marginally fail to meet the entry requirements.
