Mechanical Engineering Level 3 Advanced Diploma at New College Durham

Course description

A full-time course of primarily a practical nature for young people who wish to pursue a career in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. The training is undertaken in our new well-equipped workshops with the opportunity to work with industry standard equipment.

Course content

The main qualification is the City and Guilds 2365 Diploma Electrical Installations Level 3 consisting of:

Mandatory units

  • Engineering and environmental health and safety
  • Engineering organisational efficiency and improvement
  • Mechanical engineering principles

Specialist units (may be subject to change)

  • Computer numerical control (CNC) programming/machining
  • Advanced Milling
  • Advanced Turning

As well as this you will also receive a weekly tutorial, take part in course enrichment activities and study Maths and English at your appropriate level.

This course is assessed by a range of methods that will include practical training exercises, practical assessments and other coursework. Continuous assessment will be in the form of practical and written assignments with online assessments. However, the emphasis is on coursework rather than examinations.

Entry requirements

A minimum GCSE Grade C in Maths, English and Science or completion of an appropriate Level 2 course in the same field of study. As part of the admissions procedure you will have an interview with a member of the curriculum team and also undertake initial assessments in literacy, numeracy and practical skills.

Future opportunities

This qualification could lead to progression onto an Apprenticeship programme or other electrical based courses. Students may continue their training in order to achieve NVQ Level 3.
