Personal and Business Finance BTEC Level 3 at Queens Park Community School

Course description

This course is designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification for students interested in financial services. It gives learners the opportunity to enter employment in the business and finance sector, or to progress to more advanced vocational qualifications. This course also give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Course content

Unit 1 Financial Services for Individuals;
Understanding the financial services available in order to give people financial advice
Unit 2
Business Financial Performance; Knowledge and understanding of the critical
factors that reflect business performance, through accounting systems.
Unit 4 Financial Service Regulation; Ethics and Trends: Knowledge of the regulation of financial services and key legislation and understanding of the importance of ethics and current trends in financial services.
Year 13 Units:
Unit 3 Financial Services to Support Business; Knowledge and understanding of which financial services are available to support businesses, both when starting up, and for growth and expansion.
Unit 7 The Business Environment; Knowledge of a range of business organisations and the many factors that shape the nature of organisations operating in an increasingly complex business world.
Unit 8
Exploring Computer Applications for Financial Management; Using accounting
software to understand the importance of using computerised software to provide
accurate financial information.

Entry requirements

You will need to a real interest in the finance sector and have a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade 4 or above or equivalent, including in English and Mathematics.


All six units are assessed by portfolios of work. You will be set assignments which will require you to use your finance and business knowledge and skills in order to produce the evidence for your assessment. This evidence can be produced in different ways–
for example written reports, brochures, newsletters, and presentations. You will be graded at pass, merit or distinction. All of the six units are set and assessed internally by your tutors. There are no examinations in this course.

Future opportunities

The problem-solving nature of this course would certainly assist students who wish to go on to study a wide range of courses at higher education. Students move on to study in areas such as Finance and Business Management. The skills that you learn, in particular within the areas of financial advice and accounting, are highly prized by employers in the UK. Please note: This qualification may not be accepted at someuniversities alongside other BTEC qualifications so it is important that you check the university course entry requirements before you enroll.
