Art and Design Foundation Diploma Level 3 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

This is an intensive one year full time course which aims to increase your knowledge and skills in different aspects of art and design. It is also a pathway to enable you to go on and study art and design at Degree or HND level at leading Universities and Schools of Art and Design throughout the UK. 

Course content

The course aims to provide students with experience in a variety of art and design disciplines. It is an ideal opportunity to explore and experiment within a broad spectrum of Art and Design specialisms before going on to make a university application. It will give you a strong and diverse portfolio that demonstrates a wide range of skills and researching ability. The emphasis of the course is on experimentation and challenging preconceptions. During the first term students are introduced to a range of different practical areas whilst also developing core areas such as drawing and researching skills. In the second term students are asked to choose a specialist area and are then based in this area for the rest of the course. Historical, critical and contemporary theory is integrated into the studio programme.

The course provides students with the opportunity to experience the full range of art and design including:

• Fine Art

• Painting

• Sculpture

• Printmaking

• Fashion

• Textiles

• Three Dimensional Design

• Graphics • Photography – both 35mm and digital

• Illustration

• Digital Imagery

• Video

• Surface patterns

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and maths OR a Level 2 related qualification. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager. 


This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including coursework, projects and assignments, though primarily through portfolio presentation. 

Financial information

Students will be required to make a contribution towards trips and special events. Also students will be expected to pay £30.00 at the start of the course. There will be weekly costs of approx. £5.00 for materials needed for producing work and preparing portfolios therefore you will need to bring money with you on a daily basis to purchase art materials and/or photocopies. Students have the opportunity to purchase art packs before the start of the course.

The course is primarily an opportunity to test different Art and Design specialisms before applying for University. We aim to give you as much information about the huge range of art and design courses available nationally at Degree, Foundation Degree or HND.
