Textile Design A Level at Farnham College

Course description

Textile design involves creation, selection and manipulation across a variety of practices, often combining different disciplines, traditional and contemporary technologies.

Tools are wide ranging, encompassing traditional hand crafts and computer-aided technology. Natural and manufactured materials (including paper, wire, tissue, gauze, plastics, re-cycled packaging and cloths such as silk, wool, cotton, polyester and hessian) are used to address aspects of design in fashion, furnishing and fine art.

You will experiment with constructed textiles, dyed textiles, printed textiles, fine art textiles and fashion textiles.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English. plus a grade B or above in Art, Textiles or an Art related subject


Practical exams, coursework and tasks.

Future opportunities

As a Textile Designer you could work for manufacturing and processing companies that produce clothing, soft furnishings and other textiles-based products, large fashion and clothing retailers, small specialist design companies or interior design and decoration services.


Further information

All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.
