Design Technology (Product Design) AS and A2 Level at Cheltenham Bournside School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

3D Product Design provides students with an opportunity to develop design and manufacturing skills in a creative and innovative way.

Students will gain specialist knowledge in design, materials, manufacture and marketing with an emphasis on industrial practice and the application of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture. Students will be required to manufacture high quality products and prototypes to meet a specific need or consumer group.

Due to the length of this process, students will need to be good coursework project managers. It is an exciting course, which will allow students to become aware of the place of design in society and the influences that designers have in our world.

Course content

3D Product design offers students the chance to experiment with a wide range of materials and processes in order to manufacture 3 dimensional products. There are many opportunities to develop CAD/CAM sills, use smart or modern materials and to
try out industrial manufacturing techniques, along side more traditional approaches of hand drawn graphics and personal workshop skills in order to produce high quality prototypes.

Entry requirements

The course requires students to have a sound knowledge of Design and
Technology, such as a GCSE grade A-B qualification in Product Design, Resistant Materials, Graphic Products or Electronic Products.


AS Level: written exam. Unit 2: coursework.
A2 Level: Unit 3: written exam. Unit 4: coursework.
