Business Studies BTEC at Comberton Village College & Sixth Form

Course description

If you have ever considered becoming the next Richard Branson, or perhaps starting your own business out of a hobby or interest, this is the course for you! Maybe you want to work in the HR department, deciding who should get hired or fired, or maybe you fancy working in the Finance department being responsible for managing millions of pounds? If you want to understand how companies decide on the price for the latest mobile phone, or how to use interpersonal skills effectively to deal with a really difficult customer– the BTEC Business course can help you out. What does the course involve? BTEC First Diploma in Business is an exciting course, packed with a combination of concepts and practical application to real life businesses. You will develop skills, welcome talks from businesses, and visit large successful businesses such as Cadbury World and Thorpe Park. You will develop your skills in ICT, literacy, numeracy, team work, independent learning, creative thinking, self management, reflective learning and effective participation. You will also have opportunities to start up your own business enterprises and make some profit for yourselves! What do you study? In common with all BTEC qualifications, Business involves work on six units. All units are coursework based. There are no examinations: - Exploring Business Purposes - Learn about the main types of businesses that exist, the departments within those businesses, the sectors they operate in, and how they set targets - Investigating Financial Control - Explore the basics of business finance: profit, loss, break-even points. You will set up a company of your own and discover how fixed and variable costs impact on your profits - People in Organisations - Explore how Thorpe Park and John Lewis recruit their staff and how they train and develop them. Learn about terms and conditions and your rights and responsibilities as an employee. - Business Communication – Develop oral and written communication skills and investigate the methods of communication used within a business. - Starting a Small Business - Start up your own business enterprise while learning about the skills needed to be successful. Research the market and prepare a short business plan. - Developing Customer Relations - Discover why a good relationship with customers is important to Cadbury World, and how they go about it. Practise the skills you need in real life situations. Is this the right course for me? It is hoped that the type of student who will choose this course will be: - motivated and passionate about the world of business - enthusiastic about the challenge of completing 6 portfolios of coursework to regular deadlines - interested in the challenge of working in lots of different ways with different people to complete assignments - keen to learn not only the theory, but to apply it to real life business situations What can I do with this course in the future? The BTEC Business attracts all sorts of students. Ambitious, high achievers, keen to succeed in business, can use it as a great means to gain 4 A/A* grades to support further study at A level or degree level in future. Alternatively, pupils keen to get straight into the world of work after Comberton, for example on a training programme with a big retailer, benefit greatly not only from the business skills they have learnt, but also the work-based skills. As with all BTECs, there is also a clear progression from this to other courses, such as BTEC Nationals, NVQ qualifications or A levels in Business and Economics.
