AS/A2 Level Chemistry at Landau Forte Academy Tamworth Sixth Form
Examination Board: AQA
A level Chemistry requires and develops higher level thinking skills and excellent analytical competence and is therefore a good course for university entrance. It is essential for courses such as Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry and desirable for many others.
Aims of the course
This course is designed to encourage candidates to:
Develop a wide range of problem solving skills.
Develop practical skills.
Enhance subject knowledge.
Enhance literacy, numeracy and imagination.
Develop an understanding of the science that underpins everyday life.
Programme of Study
During the course you will develop your knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Chemistry. You will apply this knowledge in two written examinations, a coursework practical and examination as well as a range of practical investigations.
Unit 1 will give you good foundation knowledge of fundamental chemistry — including atomic structure, bonding, organic chemistry and basic calculations. You will learn why many compounds react the way that they do and why water is one of the most amazing compounds on the earth. In unit 2 you will build on this knowledge to include topics such as equilibria, halogens and redox. Throughout the course you will complete practical investigations, some of which will count towards Unit 3, which is the practical element of the course.
Unit 1: Foundation Chemistry
Unit 2: Chemistry in Action
Unit 3: Investigative and Practical skills in AS Chemistry are continuously assessed throughout the course.
This course follows a similar outline and builds on the skills learned in AS chemistry to cover topics such as acids and bases and structure determination. In later units students have an opportunity to study electrochemistry and further inorganic Chemistry.
Unit 4: Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry
Unit 5: Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry
Unit 6: Investigative and Practical skills in A2 Chemistry are continuously assessed throughout the course.
Who is the course aimed at?
This course suits students who have studied Science and Additional Science, or have studied the sciences as separate subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at GCSE. You need to be confident in your practical abilities as well as being prepared to work hard. Strong mathematical and writing skills are also essential for succeeding on the course.
