Sport & Physical Activity Cambridge Technical Diploma at St John's Marlborough

Course description

Cambridge Technicals offer creative and inspiring vocational qualifications to give a high quality, work focused alternative to A Levels.

They are for students who prefer to study Sport and Physical Activity in a context that allows them to learn and be assessed in ways that are practical and relevant to the sport industry. They have been developed in partnership with key employers in the sports industry and have designed a challenging Level 3 Sport and Physical Activity qualification which develops transferable skills such as planning, communication, adaptability and leadership that are essential in the workplace or in further study.

The course is targeted at students aged 16+ and is worth the equivalent of two A-Levels.

Course content

Students are required to complete eight units of study. 

Units of Study:

  • Body systems and the effects of physical activity
  • Sports coaching and activity leadership
  • Sports organisation and development
  • Working safely in sport, exercise, health and leisure
  • Physical activity for specific groups
  • Group exercise to music
  • Improving fitness for sport and physical activity
  • Health and fitness testing for sport and exercise
  • Sports injuries and rehabilitation
  • Sport and exercise psychology


Entry requirements

GCSE PE (Sport Science) at grade C or above is desirable but not essential.


A variety of assessment methods are incorporated with three of the units involving a written exam.

Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma

Grade D* D* = 112 UCAS Points

Grade D D = 96 UCAS Points

Grade M M = 64 UCAS Points

Grade P P = 32 UCAS Points


Future opportunities

The sport industry offers a wide range of career opportunities in public and private sectors. The breadth of study will provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress in Higher Education on a sport-related programme such as Sport and Physical Education, Sport Science, Sport Coaching and Development or Sport and Leisure Management.
