English Language at East Leake Academy

Course description

A course that is ideally suited to students who have a genuine interest in language development and analysis.

AS English Language
The course will involve the exploration and analysis of various forms of spoken, written and "electronic" English ranging from spontaneous, colloquial conversations, text messages and voice-overs to written texts produced for a specific audience and purpose. Students will study how children go through the initial phases of language acquisition and how they develop writing skills.

A2 English Language
The course will ensure a detailed understanding of the development of the English Language and the influences upon it from Celtic times to the present day. In addition, students will study a wide range of "varieties of English" including: regional, social and international variation, ebonics, the language of gender and political correctness. Students will analyse how language issues are conveyed in a range of popular texts that are aimed at a non-linguistic audience.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths.
